Our crowdfunding campaign has ended but you can still support ASME at UCLA by clicking here.
We are UCLA Combat Robotics, a student-run project team dedicated to giving every Bruin the opportunity to get hands-on experience with robotics. Over the past six years, we’ve grown from a group with a single bot to a team with a fleet of a dozen robots. Now, with over fifty members, we’re proud to represent the Bruins as the largest collegiate combat robotics team in the Western United States.
Our group is one of the project teams of UCLA’s student branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). As an interdisciplinary student organization, ASME gives Bruins with a passion for engineering the tools they need to grow professionally and academically.
Over the course of the school year, our talented team works together in small groups to create 3-pound combat robots for competition in the spring. Under the guidance of senior members, our team uses CAD (Computer Aided Drafting), 3D-printing, and machining to design and build our bots. Through this process, members can apply the theory they learn in the classroom and take away the skills they’ll need to be a successful engineer.
This year, we’ve worked tirelessly to create twelve competition-ready bots. Here is our team's current lineup:
Cal’s Combat Robotics Competition is the biggest day of the year for our team. Every spring, students from universities across the country bring their battle-ready bots to UC Berkeley for one incredible competition. This fun, high-energy event brings robotics to life in a new light. It marks the end of our season, and provides our team crucial feedback on our designs, allowing us to grow and learn from our mistakes. It’s also a great opportunity for our team to network and share ideas with our peers from around the country.
Last year, our team brought six robots and won six individual matches, which was more than any other university. This year, our team is ready to return to Cal with our new, expanded fleet of robots, but we need your support to get there!
Our goal is to provide a high-quality, low-cost program for all of our members. However, despite our ambitions, we rely almost entirely on outside support to fund our team’s activities. We need funding to cover the cost of transportation, housing, and registration. Our current fundraising goal is $3,300 dollars, which would be used in the following ways:
As our team expands, the price of competition is rising, but your donation will help us reach our goal! Your donation of any size will make a world of difference to the young engineers on our team. If you are unable to make a monetary donation, you can also show your support by spreading the word, and simply sharing this Spark campaign via social media or email. We appreciate your support!
At the end of the day, your donation goes beyond providing our team with accommodations. This experience makes an incredible impact on our team of young engineers:
"The process of creating a robot taught me an incredible number of skills that are essential for any engineering student. Also, the competition was super fun and exciting, and really brought my team together!"
- Emmanuel, Materials Science and Engineering, Class of 2022
"Coming into engineering without a lot of project experience, Combat Robotics allowed me to gain many basic, important skills and overcome challenges I never would have foreseen. I learned to do complex tasks like design thinking, 3D modeling, and electronic assembly, but I also picked up many often-overlooked skills as simple as choosing the correct screws or mounting wheels onto axles. I truly got to be a part of every stage of the process and see the project through from start to finish, understanding all of the challenges and triumphs along the way."
- Rebecca, Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2022
With your assistance, our team can continue to attend competition, inspiring the next generation of Bruins to achieve excellence as engineers. Thank you for your support!!
As a thank you for your amazing $8 donation, our team will record an 8-Clap at competition... go Bruins!!
As a thank you for your extraordinary $20.20 donation, we will send you a thank you video from the team at competition.
